Implementation of a HUMAN MILK BANK at the Santa Terezinha University Hospital (HUST) in Joaçaba, Santa Catarina, to meet the needs of 53 municipalities in the midwestern health macro-region of Santa Catarina. The implementation of a Human Milk Bank (HMB) at HUST is essential for promoting neonatal health and supporting breastfeeding in the region. Human milk is essential for the healthy development of babies, especially those born prematurely or with low birth weight, as it provides essential nutrients and antibodies that help protect against infections. The HMB will play a crucial role in promoting breastfeeding, offering support and guidance to mothers, as well as providing pasteurized human milk to babies who cannot be breastfed directly by their mothers. This will contribute to reducing infant mortality and improving neonatal health in the region. In this context, we are requesting funds from the Rotary Club to purchase the equipment necessary to establish the Human Milk Bank at HUST. We believe this partnership will be crucial to the success of the project and to the promotion of neonatal health in the region. With the support of the Rotary Club, we will be able to provide quality care to mothers and babies in the region, contributing to reducing infant mortality and improving neonatal health. This project targets premature or low-birth-weight babies admitted to the HUST; lactating women who wish to donate breast milk; and will be able to meet the needs of other health institutions. This project is expected to reduce infant mortality and improve neonatal health, increase the exclusive breastfeeding rate, and create an efficient human milk inventory management system. Project impact: Implementation of the first HMB in the Midwest region of Santa Catarina; Safe and continuous availability of human milk for at-risk newborns; Reduction in complications and prolonged neonatal ICU stays. A lasting legacy of the Rotary Club, associated with child and maternal health.

Santa Terezinha University Hospital (HUST) is a healthcare institution serving a population of approximately 637,000. The institution boasts a diverse infrastructure and is a leading healthcare provider for the Midwest and Santa Catarina Health Macroregion. It stands out for its maternity ward, the largest in the region, performing an average of 1,200 births per year. It has neonatal and pediatric intensive care units (ICUs) that care for premature and low-birth-weight babies, as well as children with special needs. Mothers and babies from 53 municipalities benefit from this service.
