The project aims to strengthen and expand the services provided by the Casa de Maria Community of Pederneiras, an organization whose mission is to restore human dignity by sheltering people in situations of social vulnerability and without family support through its Institutional Shelter service in the form of a Halfway House. Casa de Maria serves two main beneficiaries: homeless people who accept institutional shelter, many of whom suffer from chronic illnesses and are unable to return to the streets; and those who, for various reasons—especially addiction to psychoactive substances—resist shelter but utilize the services offered for overnight stays, bathing, feeding, changing and washing clothes, psychosocial care, and various guidance. The institution also shelters people in transit between cities, offering temporary shelter, emotional support, and referrals for transportation assistance. This project aims to meet the organization's most urgent needs by: 1. building a cafeteria for the Halfway House, with space for lockers and storage of belongings; 2. Renovation to adapt two existing rooms into an auditorium for training and staff meetings; 3. Renovation of the laundry room of the Halfway House Service; 4. Construction of five dormitories (four people per room) for the HUMANIZING LIVES Program – carried out at the Halfway House Service, which will house the twenty Halfway House users. This will be a space built specifically for serving this population, as the place where they are currently being served is an administrative room adapted and transformed into a dormitory. Therefore, this construction project is of great value to the entity, because when we build the new dormitories, this room where they currently sleep would become the new Auditorium, used for meetings, etc., providing users with a larger and more protected space to better meet their needs, thus meeting the health requirements and the National Classification of Social Assistance, Law 109/2009, regarding the number of people per room. 5. Construction of an outdoor gym to promote the physical health and well-being of the residents. The organization is requesting funding to purchase equipment and adapt the space to create an outdoor gym, providing exercise, quality of life, and especially mobility for the residents, as well as the development of autonomy and socialization for those with physical disabilities. 6. Construction of a beauty space to provide the various benefits of personal care for the residents, including improved self-esteem, socialization, and emotional well-being. The organization is requesting funding to adapt an existing space to suit the structure, transforming it into a "beauty space" where aesthetic care services such as haircuts, shaves, nails, and other aesthetic personal care services will be provided, optimizing the quality of the beauty day workshop already held weekly at the organization. 8. Construction of a leisure space to host therapeutic workshops, community activities, gatherings, and events held by the technical team and/or volunteers, aiming to improve the quality of leisure time, integration, and social inclusion.

The project will directly benefit hundreds of people in socially vulnerable situations. In 2024, the institution assisted 818 people, providing a total of 16,258 services that meet each individual's primary and greatest needs. The organization's work has been of great social relevance and has significantly combatted the barrier that discourages its target audience (substance addiction), achieving effective progress in harm reduction for those seeking care.
