Association of Recyclable Material Collectors of Santos Dumont was founded in 2005 with the purpose of uniting collectors to provide them with better working conditions. Currently the municipality of Santos Dumont has approximately fifty collectors who live in precarious and inhumane conditions. In the almost twenty years of the Association's existence, it has never heard of projects and partnerships that would make union and collective work possible. The lack of management is the main factor that made the success of collective work unfeasible. Sustainability is a characteristic or condition of a process or system that allows it to persist, at a certain level, for a certain period of time. This concept has become a principle according to which the use of natural resources to satisfy present needs cannot compromise the satisfaction of the needs of future generations, being expanded to the term sustainability in the long term. Sustainability is the ability of human beings to interact with the world, preserving the environment so as not to compromise the natural resources of future generations. The sustainability tripod corresponds to an organization's results measured in social, environmental and economic terms. - Social refers to the treatment of the human capital of a company or society; - Environmental refers to the natural capital of a company or society; - Economic / Financial is about profit, being the economic result. In 2023, a team that sought to incorporate a commitment to sustainable development into the institution took over management of the Association of Recyclable Material Collectors of Santos Dumont. Currently, recyclable material collectors in the municipality started their activities with recycling due to lack of opportunity and living in conditions of social vulnerability. Individual work directly harms those who work in the area and also the population who are unable to contribute effectively to the correct disposal of waste. There are still insufficient actions in Brazilian municipalities towards adequate management of urban solid waste, resulting in public administrations lacking greater concern for environmental impacts and the quality of life of the population itself. It is noteworthy that selective collection is responsible for socio-environmental gains such as reducing the volume of solid waste sent to landfill, thus increasing its useful life and avoiding the use of new areas.
