In Brazil, 56% of second-grade children cannot read or write (UN News, 2024). In Paiçandu, Paraná, a municipality with high social vulnerability, more than 8,000 people receive Bolsa Família benefits, and 680 live in extreme poverty. This reality is reflected in school dropout rates, low reading proficiency, and a lack of stimulation for children's development. The "Read and Play: The Magic of Discovery" project aims to promote literacy and the comprehensive development of approximately 3,000 children between the ages of 4 months and 11 years, especially from the municipality's most underserved areas. Actions include: Implementation of a children's library and toy library at the Maria Aparecida Lacal Municipal School, equipped with a literary collection, educational toys, audiovisual resources, and appropriate furniture, serving 401 students (with expansion to 800). Creation of reading spaces in seven CMEIs and at the Anita Cordeiro Marist Social School, with "The Magic of Discovery" educational kits, benefiting more than 2,100 children. Pedagogical training on three fronts (storytelling, active methodologies, and use of teaching resources), each lasting 20 hours. The Family Stories Project encourages parents and children to read together. The "Welcome with Love" initiative, a lecture during the pedagogical week, guides teachers in active listening and identifying cases of child abuse. With a budget of US$36,317, financed by partner Rotary clubs and the Global Fund, the project ensures sustainability through integration into the school curriculum, teacher training, and monitoring by the Municipal Department of Education and the Rotary Club of Maringá-ACIM. The initiative aligns with Rotary's priorities in basic education and literacy, combating illiteracy, strengthening public schools, and providing equal opportunities for learning, citizenship, and a future for the children of Paiçandu.

The project will serve approximately 3,000 socially vulnerable children aged 4 months to 11 years in the municipality of Paiçandu, Paraná. Students from the Maria Aparecida Lacal Municipal School (401, with expansion to 800), the seven CMEIs, and the Marista Anita Cordeiro Social School (over 2,100 students) will benefit. The majority live in underserved neighborhoods such as Itaipu I and II, Monte Carmelo, and Ocupação Dom Helder Câmara.
