The project has three specific objectives: 1. The first is to detect and treat a greater number of cases of congenital Chagas disease by applying the PCR method to newborns of mothers with Chagas disease in 2/3 health establishments in the city, in addition to the Percy maternity hospital. Boland Rodriguez, 2. consolidate the molecular biology laboratory of the women's hospital in charge of carrying out the PCR tests and 3. make visible the problem of the disease and raise awareness among mothers and pediatricians in general about the need to diagnose and treat to the kids. Bolivia is the country with the highest incidence of Chagas in relation to its population and Santa Cruz, the most affected department, with close to 500,000.- As progress is made in eliminating the vector thanks to the national Chagas control program as well as Due to the improvement of housing (especially due to rural-urban migration), the congenital transmission route is increasingly important. It represents 26% of new infections. It is precisely due to migration that the disease has ceased to be a problem in rural areas but rather an urban one. A recent study by Johns Hopkins University in the United States has confirmed that 1 in 5 pregnant women at the Percy Boland maternity hospital in Santa Cruz, the largest in the country, have Chagas disease and that 5% of these transmit it to their newborn. The study also confirmed that we are failing to detect between 50 and 70% of congenital Chagas cases due to the low sensitivity of the diagnostic method applied by the National Chagas Control Program. PCR is still expensive and cannot be expected to be covered by mothers as well as by the national program in the short term. The project tries to save lives by financing PCR until even more accessible prices of PCR are achieved, cheaper methods are developed (there are promising advances in this regard) and finally, to achieve that the method and the goals of the project become the methods and goals of the National Chagas Program. Finally note that the project has designed the intervention in order to diagnose and also treat the siblings of newborns under 12 years of age.

It is expected to detect and treat at least 40 cases of congenital Chagas disease and the same number of siblings under 12 years of age by applying 1,000 to 1,300 PCR tests. The project will also finance 2 short-term consultancies for the institutional strengthening of the molecular biology laboratory and 2 workshops with the aim of making the problem visible and raising awareness among mothers and pediatricians about the need and opportunity to diagnose and treat children. . Today, those who worry about the disease are cardiologists when it is too late.
