Quilombos emerged from the struggle for freedom and are guardians of knowledge, work, and faith. Despite being legally recognized, many communities remain without clean water and sanitation, with preventable diseases that primarily affect children. This project combines Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), sustainability, and community governance to transform history into a future. Phase 1 – Fair (US$69,800): Implement two complete water systems, 12 demonstration toilets, and six workshops (hygiene, operation/maintenance, and management). Include initial O&M, 12-month monitoring (water quality and childhood diarrhea), and local water and hygiene committees. Assessment and FPIC: Prior to implementation, a community assessment will be conducted with a baseline (water/health/hygiene), Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), and a study of technical alternatives for each site. Sustainability: Operation by the community entity with MoU (roles and routines), O&M fund (community fee with exemption rules), and operator training. Phase 2 – Global Grant (+US$25,000): Expand restrooms and network/storage, strengthen the Quilombola kitchen/restaurant, and cultural routes (November 20), maintaining a focus on health and safety.

Phase 1: ≥150 households (~600 people) with safe water, demonstration toilets, and health education. Baseline: Initial collection (water/health/hygiene) to measure -40% childhood diarrhea in 12 months in pilot communities.
